A Chimpanzee Speaks to God
You have gifted us green forests
that breathe cool mist
the pulpy bleeding fruit flesh
and sweet scurrying insects.
For these, we are grateful
Yet we worry over the impending
alterations in our fabric,
the forms we now inhabit.
How will we know ourselves
when you have stitched us
in our human skins?
Fur will bristle inside
and we will rub our backs on trees
seeking to shed soft useless covering.
Fangs will curl back
into our brains
behind new neat teeth,
those milk pearls.
Claws will hide in soft palms
leaving dull smooth nails
that bend against bark.
Inside will be our souls,
furred and fanged,
crouching in undergrowth,
sniffing each other's musk.
Outside will be our new faces,
so like your own,
dark and fresh,
glistening in the sun.
Our shrieks of fear
will be transformed to psalms.

I was just thinking about this type of thing yesterday. On cuteoverload there was a video of an elephant painting a portrait of itself. With paintbrush in trunk, painted his portrait holding a flower in his trunk, free and happy. It made me a little sad.
Have a good night Lucy :)
Animals are smarter than we give them credit for being. Elephants are supposedly quite bright. Our definitions of animal intelligence unfortunately revolve around obedience and the performance of tricks. Maybe the most intelligent animals just refuse us?
Sounds sad Lavender. Something sad about those wrinkled large lumbering beasts, who bury their dead witht their trunks. Hey you are getting another poem out of me.
Lucy, who thanks Lydia, her muse
Thanks SweetMisery!!! I am feeling good about "clever."

true. Dr. Leaky' Lucy is coming to Seattle, a great, possilbly furred mother. It will be neat to stare upon her remnants. Close to religion for me!

Thanks Tammie. Being raised Catholic, I struggled with what I knew of evolution as a child. I think the assumption was that because we were part animal, we were less divine. I think animals are divine. We don't see them killing each other in large wars. I love animals greatly.

Have a great day Lucy :)
thanks Renee. I was thinking of trying for Sub Terrain's religion theme issue.
