A Midnight Poem (rev. 3/28/08)
Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I compose a poem in my head. Boy, are they hard to remember in the morning! But still, here is the latest, as best I can recall it now.
Generally, I have no idea what they mean, and that is the case this time, too.
Perhaps it is just the sound of the words that I find appealing?
I wander down this road
I travel along this trail
That so many millions
Have wandered down and traveled along
Before
Millions upon millions upon millions!
Each was born, lived, traveled, died
Their little tombs litter the roadside
None appears especially impressive now
None of those whose names
Had once won fame
I guess one day that will be my fate
I guess that that is the final fate of us all
But not yet!
Still I have to take
A few more
Wandering steps
Along this faint
(Though well-worn)
Trail
One, then another,
Then another
More, and more
That is my task of
Today
That is my dream for
Tomorrow
